Research Overview

Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid neuropeptide / hormone synthesized in the hypothalamus. Synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin) is FDA-approved for labor induction/augmentation and postpartum hemorrhage. Intranasal oxytocin has been widely studied for social bonding, autism, and psychiatric conditions, but results are mixed and a large NIH-funded trial did not show improved social functioning in children with autism. This entry is a research-reference summary; it does not represent the approved obstetric drug.

Laboratory Storage & Handling

For laboratory/research material only. Store lyophilized material desiccated at -20°C, protected from light and moisture. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Handle using appropriate laboratory PPE and follow institutional SOPs. Not for human administration, reconstitution for human use, or diagnostic use.
