Classification

Mitochondrial-derived peptide (MTRNR2; 21/24-aa cytoprotective peptide)

Mechanism / Biological Target

Reported to interact with Bax-family proteins (e.g., BimEL), FPRL1/formyl peptide receptors, and IGFBP3 to suppress apoptosis and stress signaling; protective activity is specific to certain AD-relevant insults rather than a general anti-apoptotic effect.

Research Overview

Humanin is a small mitochondrial-derived peptide (21 or 24 amino acids depending on translational origin, encoded by the MTRNR2 gene region) discovered as a factor protecting against Alzheimer-disease-relevant apoptotic insults. Preclinical studies report cytoprotective, neuroprotective, and metabolic effects, and levels change with age in some tissues. Evidence is mechanistic/preclinical; no demonstrated clinical efficacy in humans, and humanin is not an approved drug. Mechanistic/preclinical findings should not be conflated with demonstrated clinical effects.

Laboratory Storage & Handling

For laboratory/research material only. Store lyophilized material desiccated at -20°C, protected from light and moisture. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Handle using appropriate laboratory PPE and follow institutional SOPs. Not for human administration, reconstitution for human use, or diagnostic use.
