Research Overview

Cerebrolysin is a porcine brain-derived preparation of low-molecular-weight peptides and amino acids reported to have neurotrophic and neuroprotective activity. It is approved in over 50 countries for stroke, traumatic brain injury, and dementia, but is NOT approved by the FDA in the United States. Cochrane reviews in vascular dementia found low to very-low-quality evidence with inconsistent results, and a large 2012 stroke trial cast doubt on benefit except possibly in severe cases. This is a research-reference summary, not an approved drug product in the US.
