Research Overview

5-Amino-1MQ (5-amino-1-methylquinolinium) is a small-molecule, membrane-permeable inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme upregulated in white adipose tissue in obesity. A proof-of-concept study in diet-induced obese mice reported reduced body weight and adiposity without observed adverse effects, and in vitro work showed reduced 1-methylnicotinamide with increased intracellular NAD+ and SAM. Human data are lacking. 5-Amino-1MQ is not an approved drug.
